The Child Restraint Evaluation Program (CREP) is an independent test for baby car seats, ensuring they are above and beyond the minimum required Australian standards. There are two main child restraints to consider:
1.Capsules: 0 to 6 months
A capsule is rearward-facing and includes an inbuilt harness. This is the legal requirement for babies under six months and can be used up to when the child can still fit comfortably into the seat.
2.Forward-facing car seat: 6 months to 4 years
A front-facing restraint has a six-point harness, and is recommended that children use one for as long as they can fit in it after they turn four.

When is it safe for children to use an adult seat belt?
By law, all children must be suitably restrained. If a child aged seven or over is too small for an adult seat belt, you should still use the booster seat. The "five-step test" should be performed before moving a child to an adult seat belt (roughly when 145cm tall):
- Can the child sit with their back against the seat?
- Are knees bent comfortably over the front edge of the cushion?
- Does the shoulder belt sit across the mid-shoulder?
- Is the lap belt across the top of their thighs?
- Can they remain in this position for the whole trip?
